What is a Sukajan?

The Sukajan, or souvenir jacket , is a jacket steeped in history, born after World War II, which symbolizes the unique blend of American and Japanese cultures. Initially, American soldiers stationed in Yokosuka, Japan, began to personalize their jackets by embroidering motifs representing their military exploits, as well as elements of Japanese culture, such as dragons, tigers, or traditional landscapes. These embroidered jackets became sought-after souvenirs, and their popularity quickly spread beyond military bases. This fashion phenomenon transformed into a symbol of rebellion among Japanese youth in the 1950s and 1960s, particularly within the Sukaman movement, who appropriated this garment as a sign of affirmation of their freedom and individuality. The Sukajan thus became much more than a simple souvenir: it became a true symbol of the union of two cultures and an essential element of streetwear.
