Modern Kokeshi – Amayadori Pattern
1. The origin of modern Kokeshi
Originating in the mountains of northern Japan, kokeshi were originally simple dolls offered in hot springs. Over time, they have evolved into modern kokeshi ( sōsaku kokeshi ), becoming unique pieces of art in which each artisan conveys their emotions, culture, and poetic vision of the world. Freed from traditional codes, they offer infinite creative freedom.
2. The appearance of Kokeshi – Amayadori
Amayadori (雨宿り) means "to shelter from the rain" . This kokeshi captures an intimate moment: that of a character about to protect himself from a gentle downpour, or just sheltered, in a hushed atmosphere of silence and calm.
She is dressed in a traditional kimono with simple, elegant lines, and holds a bright red kasa , the iconic Japanese umbrella, still folded but ready to be unfurled. This contrast between the discreet kimono and the bright red of the kasa evokes both delicacy and strength, restraint and vital energy.
Her serene and peaceful gaze invites contemplation: Amayadori is an ode to those suspended moments where we slow down, where we protect ourselves, where the rain almost becomes music.
