Modern Kokeshi – Jyufuku Pattern
1. The origin of modern Kokeshi
Born in the mountainous region of Tōhoku in northern Japan, kokeshi were originally simple wooden toys sold as souvenirs in hot spring villages. Over time, they have become an art form in their own right. Modern kokeshi ( sōsaku kokeshi ) break away from traditional regional styles to give free rein to the artisan's inspiration, resulting in unique and expressive pieces that blend heritage and contemporary creativity.
2. The appearance of the Kokeshi – Jyufuku pattern
The name Jyufuku (十福) literally means "ten happinesses" or ten blessings , a strong symbol of prosperity, longevity, and lasting happiness in Japanese culture. This kokeshi wears a kimono adorned with stylized traditional patterns evoking luck and plenitude. The shapes can be reminiscent of flowers, ancient geometric symbols, or even calligraphy evoking abundance.
Its peaceful, almost meditative expression and upright posture make it a benevolent presence , ideal for accompanying positive intentions in a home or meditation space.
