Modern Kokeshi – Kikumusume Pattern

1. The origin of modern Kokeshi

Kokeshi , originating from northern Japan, were originally simple handcrafted dolls offered in hot springs as good luck charms. With the emergence of modern kokeshi ( sōsaku kokeshi ), they have become true works of art. Each piece, handcrafted, reflects the inspiration, emotions and aesthetic universe of the artisan.

2. The appearance of the Kokeshi – Kikumusume

Kikumusume (菊娘) literally means "chrysanthemum girl" , an iconic figure in Japanese art and traditions, often depicted in kabuki performances or ukiyo-e prints. She symbolizes purity, classical beauty and floral delicacy .

This kokeshi embodies this poetic figure with great elegance. She is dressed in a kimono adorned with chrysanthemums (kiku), noble flowers in Japan, associated with autumn, longevity and harmony. The floral motifs gracefully unfold on her garment, in shades of golden yellow, red, or deep purple , evoking both the richness of the season and the subtlety of the gestures.

Her gentle and peaceful face, framed by a neat traditional hairstyle, completes this image of an elegant and refined young girl, both rooted in tradition and bathed in timeless charm .
