Modern Kokeshi – Kosode Pattern
1. The origin of modern Kokeshi
Kokeshi , Japanese wooden dolls born in the mountains of Tōhoku, were originally simple handcrafted toys. Over time, they have become prized art objects, particularly through the modern kokeshi movement ( sōsaku kokeshi ), which allows artisans to create freely without being limited to traditional regional styles. Each doll thus becomes a medium for artistic expression, carrying symbols, emotions and culture.
2. The appearance of the Kokeshi – Kosode
The word Kosode (小袖) refers to an ancient type of kimono with narrow sleeves, worn by both men and women during the Edo period, and considered the ancestor of the modern kimono. This kokeshi pays homage to this iconic garment, combining sobriety, elegance and classic refinement .
She wears an intricately decorated kimono , featuring delicate patterns inspired by traditional Japanese textiles. The designs may evoke natural elements such as leaves, waves, or stylized flowers, often in deep, harmonious hues. The doll's upright silhouette evokes restraint and dignity, while her serene face reflects a calm, timeless presence.
Kosode embodies a perfect balance between tradition and aesthetics , and will find its place both in a collection and as a decorative piece in its own right.
