Modern Kokeshi – Taishun Pattern
1. The origin of modern Kokeshi
Originating in the mountains of northern Japan, kokeshi were originally simple wooden dolls given as souvenirs at hot springs. Over time, they became an art form in their own right, evolving into modern kokeshi ( sōsaku kokeshi ), which no longer follow traditional regional styles but instead give free rein to the creativity of each artisan. Each piece thus reflects an emotion, a season, or a poetic symbol.
2. The appearance of the Kokeshi – Taishun
The name Taishun (泰春) can be translated as "peaceful spring" or "spring serenity," evoking a tranquil and harmonious renewal. This kokeshi embodies the understated beauty of Japanese spring: a season of hope, rebirth, and soft light.
Taishun wears a bright white kimono , a true canvas of purity, adorned with large floral motifs that capture the invigorating energy of nature in bloom. The flowers, stylized or inspired by traditional painting, evoke the generosity and splendor of spring. This bright, contrasting and expressive dress gives the doll a presence that is both elegant and joyful .
Her delicately painted face expresses a gentle and radiant inner peace. Taishun is an invitation to welcome renewal with calm and wonder.
