Modern Kokeshi – Umemai Pattern
1. The origin of modern Kokeshi
Originating in the mountainous regions of northern Japan, kokeshi were originally simple wooden dolls sold in hot springs. In the 20th century, they evolved into modern kokeshi ( sōsaku kokeshi ), giving artisans complete creative freedom. Each piece becomes an intimate expression of an emotion, a symbol, or a suspended moment, celebrating beauty in simplicity.
2. The appearance of the Kokeshi – Umemai
The name Umemai (梅舞) can be translated as "dance of the plum blossoms" . This kokeshi embodies all the poetry of early spring in Japan, when the first plum blossoms (ume) bloom in the still-present cold. A symbol of resilience, purity and understated elegance, the ume is often associated with inner strength and renewal.
Umemai wears a kimono adorned with plum blossoms , painted with finesse and lightness, as if they were fluttering in the wind. The dress, in soft shades (powder pinks, ivory, delicate reds), evokes a silent choreography of petals. The doll's peaceful face reinforces this impression of natural grace and fragile harmony . She seems frozen in a timeless dance , between the nostalgia of winter and the promise of spring.
