Modern Kokeshi – Umewarabe Pattern

1. The origin of modern Kokeshi

Born in northern Japan, kokeshi began as simple handcrafted dolls sold in spas, before evolving into modern kokeshi ( sōsaku kokeshi ), true works of art. Each artisan imprints their own style, blending cultural heritage, Japanese aesthetics, and personal emotion. These unique creations have become collector's items, full of meaning and poetry.

2. The appearance of the Kokeshi – Umewarabe

The name Umewarabe (梅童) literally means "child of the plum tree" . This kokeshi exudes a youthful and poetic sweetness , inspired by the first days of Japanese spring. It evokes a young child playing under the plum trees in bloom, in a scene imbued with innocence, tenderness and freshness.

She wears a kimono in delicate shades , often pink or cream, dotted with finely drawn plum blossoms (ume) . Her round, expressive face conveys the purity of childhood , while her simple, harmonious silhouette accentuates her endearing appearance. Umewarabe embodies the beauty of renewal, the joy of first blossoms, and the gentle energy of youth.
