Modern Kokeshi – Uraraka Odango Pattern
1. The origin of modern Kokeshi
Kokeshi are traditional Japanese wooden dolls, originating from the rural regions of northern Japan. Long sold as souvenirs in hot springs, they evolved in the 20th century with the emergence of modern kokeshi ( sōsaku kokeshi ), true works of art freed from regional canons. Each contemporary kokeshi reflects the soul of its creator and embodies a unique sensibility, somewhere between cultural heritage and artistic expression.
2. The appearance of the Kokeshi – Uraraka Odango
The Uraraka Odango kokeshi evokes the joyful freshness of spring and the lightness of the moment . Uraraka (うららか) means "soft," "bright," or "springlike," while Odango refers to the small balls of rice dough, but also, affectionately, to the round buns worn by some young Japanese girls.
This delicately sculpted doll features hair pulled back into two rounded buns , a detail that gives her a tender and playful look. Her kimono, adorned with stylized floral or spring motifs, captures the sweetness of a clear, sunny day. Uraraka Odango embodies simple joy, innocence, and timeless charm.
