Modern Kokeshi – Wasshoi Boy Pattern

1. The origin of modern Kokeshi

Originating in northern Japan, kokeshi were once simple dolls given as souvenirs at hot springs. Today, modern kokeshi ( sōsaku kokeshi ) have become expressive, handcrafted works of art. They embody characters, emotions, and scenes from traditional Japanese life, in a poetic yet stylized approach.

2. The appearance of the Kokeshi – Wasshoi Boy

Full of energy and good humor, the Wasshoi Boy kokeshi pays homage to the festive spirit of matsuri (Japanese festivals). The word “Wasshoi!” is a traditional shout of encouragement chanted while carrying mikoshi (portable altars) during processions.

This young boy is depicted in matsuri attire , with a blue happi adorned with white patterns , a belt tied at the waist and a hachimaki (headband) on his forehead , ready to carry the mikoshi or dance to the rhythm of the drums. His joyful and determined expression captures the vitality of these festive moments, punctuated by music and collective fervor.

Wasshoi Boy is a dynamic, lively kokeshi that brings a touch of enthusiasm, tradition and youth to your collection.
